Did You Know? (June)
June is LGBT Pride month
In 2000, President Bill Clinton proclaimed June to be Gay and Lesbian Pride Month in the United States. On June 1, 2009, President Barack Obama designated June as LGBT Pride Month. This month is meant to recognize the impact Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender individuals have had on the world. Our LGBT Section includes Lesbian Fiction and Gay Fiction as well as many texts on the social impact, the struggles, and history of the LGBT lifestyle.
Did You Know? (May)
I have been cleaning up the mystery and detective novel section for so long I am starting to talk the slang. For this month’s “Did you Know?” I have a fun slang sentence for you to decipher:
“The flim-flammer jumped in the flivver and faded.”
What?! For more of these fun sentences visit the Mystery Room on the 3rd floor and pick up a detective story.

Did You Know? (April)
Ephemera is a term to describe written and printed matter intended to be thrown away after one use. Collectible ephemera are bookmarks, catalogs, greeting cards, letters, pamphlets, postcards, posters, etc.
Ephemeris is a table of values that gives the positions of astronomical objects in the sky at a given time or times. Different kinds are used for astronomy and astrology. And we have both!
Ephemera-We have a closet full in our Foreign Language room on the 3rd floor. You can pull up a stool and get lost in all the old photos, postcards and pamphlets.
Ephemeris-We have books with charts dating back to the 1890s in our Religion/Belief Systems/and Phenomena section on the Mezzanine.

SUSAN reports: “Just in is a 1988 book of short stories by E. Annie Proulx (The Shipping News, Brokeback Mountain) called Heartsongs and Other Stories. Proulx is a favorite author of mine but what really caught my eye was the great picture on the cover. It’s small here but definitely worth a look in person.”
